#MgoGrad: Behind the Scenes
Before the soon-to-be alumni of the class of 2013 arrived in the Big House on the day of commencement, the #UMSocial team was planning how to best cover this memorable day.
It all started months prior when we met to plan for the announcement of this year’s commencement speaker: Twitter CEO and Michigan grad Dick Costolo. For this commencement, more eyes would be on social media...

Uncommon Campus: Marine Hydrodynamics Lab
LSA’s Uncommon campus video took us from the Burton Tower to a spot on Campus that was a bit less recognizable. We found ourselves at the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory. The 360 foot trough is tucked away in the ground floor of West Hall right off the engineering spot, this is a place most students past daily.

@dickc to speak at Commencement! #MgoGrad
There are many things that go into creating the Michigan experience. From staying up late to paint the rock or joining the Michigan Squirrel Club out on the diag, these experiences are what makes our campus so unique. It is nearly impossible to go through your 4 years here without spending a fall afternoon in the Big House.
There is a special day in the spring when you wake up early and make the...

What the New Pinterest Analytics Mean For...
You may have read online this week that Pinterest has officially launched their analytics for business accounts. This is a free service for any Pinterest user with a business account, which means your account must be verified by a web URL (you can do this simply by pasting a code onto your homepage or blog, and it displays a small checkmark next to your name), and “registered.” If...

Uncommon Campus: Burton Memorial Tower and...
When we saw LSA’s video Uncommon Campus, we were eager to do a little discovery of our own around the UMich campus. Our first stop is arguably one of the most recognizable landmarks in Ann Arbor: The Burton Memorial Tower and Carillon.
The tower itself was built and dedicated in 1936 to University President Marion Leroy Burton (1920-1925). It was designed by Albert Kahn, who...

How Ben Bernanke and @FordSchool Used Social Media...
Monday, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke visited our campus to speak and answer questions, hosted by the Ford School of Public Policy. While it was a full house, our attention was turned online. Using the hashtag #fordschoolbernanke, people were invited to tweet questions and follow along with the conversation. The event was also livestreamed through the Ford School’s website.

A guest post by William Foreman, the global communication manager at U-M’s News Service. He prefers Cantonese dim sum and peppery Hunanese dishes.
Does Ann Arbor have any decent Chinese restaurants? It’s a common question asked by students from China thinking about studying at the University of Michigan. I could share my opinion with them, but as a non-Chinese PR guy, they probably wouldn’t...

#Hashtags — #Why, #When, #What, #How
Some of the most common questions (and debates) that come across my desk involve Twitter hashtags. What is a hashtag? Should I create one for my event? How do I use it? What should my hashtag be?
I’m going to attempt to give a fairly comprehensive guide to hashtags, and how to use them at the University of Michigan.
WHAT IS A HASHTAG?
According to the Twitter Help Center (support.twitter.com),...

Prolific and respected writer Susan Orlean, a University of Michigan alum, spoke this spring at the English Department’s graduation event. Here’s an excerpt from her speech about storytelling in the Twitter age:
“I think the basic unit of humankind is the story. It’s how we learn and how we pass along to each other the idea of who we are. We connect the dots, and then we...

Innovating Detroit with the help of #RossLeaders
A guest post by Christopher Ankney, Social Media Specialist at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business.
This week, 500 MBA students from the Ross School of Business have one, straightforward, no-big-deal task: Innovate Detroit.
Working in teams with one of six non-profit organizations, the students will have six days to fully develop a “pitch” for a new for-profit venture that creates...

Our overarching 2013 goals
I just finished writing the 2013 major goals for the #UMSocial department. Yes, now I have to actually write how we’re going to achieve those goals, but I thought that I would share them, in the interest of openness and also the hope that you’ll share too.
1. Become a thought leader in higher education social media.
2. Be responsive in our actions and empathetic in our reactions.
3....

With dozens of U-M affiliated athletes taking part in the 2012 Summer Olympics, we wanted to harness the excitement for the games and the passion of our audience to do some visual storytelling on the Leaders and Best Facebook page.
In the week leading up to the Opening Ceremony, we posted images of...

ON THE GRID: Making the student voice visual
I’ve been toying for MONTHS about the best way to get great U-M photos all collected in one place. I tried using the #UMInstagram hashtag (which is still kinda cool, but I hadn’t truly found a good use for it).
Storify is cool, but it’s just not as powerful as I want it to be.
And then today it hit me: The @umichstudents media grid.
It couldn’t be a more perfect visual...
