New and returning U-M students have plenty of questions about life on campus: Can I eat at dining halls other than the one at my residence? How can I keep my bike and other belongings secure? Who can I talk to if I feel homesick or depressed?

The new school year brings excitement and energy, but it can also come with some anxiety. It’s challenging to get acclimated, meet new people, and navigate the plethora of resources available on a large campus.

UMSocial’s August #UMichChat, hosted back-to-back on Instagram Live and Facebook Live on the UMichStudents page, answered these questions and more to give students a guide for living on campus.

Fielding questions were Daniel Greene, student body president; Princess-Amanda Onwenu, program assistant at Wolverine Wellness; Officer Kaitlin Deslatte, Division of Public Safety and Security; and Maeve Skelly, sustainability intern at Michigan Dining.

The short-form Instagram Live (UMSocial’s first Instagram Live) focused on the essentials: how to make time for personal mental and physical health, what dining options are available, how to get involved in student activities, and when and how to report suspicious activity.

A springboard to a more detailed chat on the newly launched UMichStudents Facebook group, both live chats allowed guests to field specific questions in an innovative format specifically tailored to the younger demographic.

Key points were live-tweeted on the @UMichStudents account:

The video lives on the UMichStudents Facebook page and is worth a look, even if you’re a returning student. There’s all kinds of new information you’ll need to know for the semester.
