Social media’s great strength has always been its ability to connect people around the world, instantaneously, and (almost always) for free. Inspiring unprecedented dialogues, collaborations, and communities, social media lowered the barrier for brands to engage with stakeholders and increased their ability to provide high-quality unfettered customer service.

But in 2020, we saw the convergence of these features become social media’s biggest struggle. With a majority of the global population now working remotely, tethered to technology more than ever before, this year pushed the boundaries of strategic communications, demanding more content, faster responses, increased accessibility, dynamic visuals, and more people-centered conversations.

Throughout this past year, UMSocial shared nearly 4,500 posts on the University of Michigan’s Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube channels. From a silent campus, to a parade recognizing frontline health care workers, and a crucial need to share resources from public health officials, here are the top 20 social media moments of the year.
